Nov 26, 2009

It’s American Thanksgiving, and even though we had already celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving over a month ago, we felt the urge to celebrate it all over again because any excuse to cook a full turkey is a holiday to me. But to put a spin on things, we incorporated some Canadian and British elements to make a unique turkey dinner for American Thanksgiving.

One sunday last summer, I was at a pub in London, UK enjoying a sunday roast. Happily devouring my roast beef and slowly working through the gravy filled yorkshire pudding, I thought to myself, “You know what would work well with this yorkshire pudding? Poutine.” And thus, my idea of a poutine inside of a yorkshire pudding was born. One year later, we made our first attempt and even took this a step further specially for the occasion, to make a Turkey Poutine on top of a Yorkshire Pudding. This is the result.

We are quite pleased with the results, and our stomachs were thanking us after this meal. However, the Yorkshire Pudding didn’t rise as it should have, so it was more like a pancake, but it still tasted normal. Also, the cheese curds were ok, not the best, but good enough for this dinner. On the other hand, the gravy was very tasty, complete with peppercorns for that extra kick. But it was turkey that gave this poutine it’s character and it’s taste, good job on the tasty bird Mike. The broccoli and carrots just added some colour to the dish for presentation purposes. All in all, for a first attempt, it was a success. Now that we are smarter we will attempt it again, and again, and again. Happy Thanksgiving!

My poutine passion brought me to Montreal this past summer, where I indulged myself in a little bit of poutine heaven for several months. When word on my location got out, I began receiving out of town visitors keen on trying poutine, the authentic kind.

But where is the best place in Montreal? Stefan has already beat me to it by conducting his own poutine excursion in Montreal last summer. So I invited him out along with a cast of other poutine experts to continue on our quest for the best poutine in Montreal. The results are below.

Youtube quality is sometimes shit. So if you want to watch this on a higher quality, the full video is also posted near the bottom of my FUN STUFF section.
